Why the VW Community Keeps These Legends Alive

Dave Fuller 30 March 2026

There are 41 Volkswagen Touareg R50s still registered in the UK. That number hasn’t fallen to zero – and it won’t, not quickly at least – because of the people who refuse to let it.

Car communities have always played this role. Long before the internet, enthusiasts were meeting in pub car parks, sharing photocopied parts diagrams and swapping phone numbers for specialists who understood their particular obsession. The internet didn’t change the impulse – it just made it faster, wider and better.

At VW Owners Club, we see it every day. Someone inherits a Corrado VR6 that hasn’t run in ten years – someone on the forum has the exact wiring diagram they need. A Phaeton owner is chasing a strange fault code – three members have seen it before and know exactly what it is. An R50 owner needs a suspension specialist – the community has the recommendations.

This is how rare cars survive. Not through museums or collections alone, but through the collective knowledge and stubbornness of people who simply won’t let them go.

When Top Gear came looking for a Touareg R50 for their feature on the greatest V10 engines ever built, they turned to VW Owners Club. Through our Touareg community, we connected them with the right people – and the result was a feature in one of the world’s most famous car publications, celebrating one of the most extraordinary engines ever fitted to a road car.

That’s a small story in the grand scheme of things. But it’s a good one. A reminder of what a community of enthusiasts can do when it functions as it should – knowledge freely shared, passion openly celebrated.

VW Owners Club has over 70 dedicated model groups, completely free membership and a community that stretches across every corner of the Volkswagen world. From the humblest Polo to the magnificent R50, every VW has a home here.

If you love Volkswagens, join us for free at VW Owners Club. The legends don’t keep themselves alive. We do it together.
