VW ID.7 Review – Is It Worth Buying in the UK?

Dave Fuller 30 March 2026

What Makes the ID.7 Special?

The Volkswagen ID.7 represents a significant leap forward in VW’s electric vehicle lineup. This sleek, spacious saloon arrived in UK showrooms in 2023 and has quickly established itself as one of the most compelling electric vehicles on the market. If you’re considering making the switch to electric and wondering whether VW’s flagship EV is worth your investment, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve been watching this model closely, and plenty of VW Owners Club members have already made the jump.

Design and Practicality

From the moment you lay eyes on the ID.7, it’s clear this isn’t just another boxy EV. The sleek, aerodynamic design cuts through the air with a drag coefficient of just 0.24 Cd, which directly contributes to impressive efficiency. Inside, you’ll find a sophisticated interior that feels genuinely premium, with high-quality materials and intuitive layouts. The spacious cabin offers genuine five-seat comfort, making it one of the roomiest electric saloons available in the UK market.

The boot space is genuinely impressive at 532 litres, expanding to 1,861 litres with the rear seats folded. For a saloon, this is proper family car territory. Whether you’re loading up for a trip to the Cotswolds or packing for a holiday, the ID.7 handles it all with ease. Members of the VW Owners Club consistently praise the practicality of their ID.7s, particularly when it comes to everyday living.

Performance and Driving Experience

The ID.7 comes in several guises, with the Standard and Pro variants available in the UK market. The Standard version offers a 62 kWh battery (net), while the Pro steps up with an 82 kWh battery. Both deliver impressive acceleration for daily driving, with the Pro managing 0-62 mph in around 7.4 seconds. It’s not going to set your heart racing like a GTI, but it’s more than adequate for UK motorways and urban commuting.

What genuinely impresses drivers is the smoothness of the driving experience. The electric motor delivers instant torque, making even casual city driving feel refined and effortless. The suspension strikes an excellent balance between comfort and handling, soaking up our variable UK road surfaces without feeling overly soft or aggressive.

Range and Charging

Real-world range is crucial when considering an EV, and the ID.7 delivers genuinely impressive figures. The Standard model offers around 260 miles of range, while the Pro achieves approximately 370 miles on a full charge. For most UK drivers, this means charging once per week becomes a realistic possibility, particularly if you have home charging installed.

Charging at home using a 7 kW wallbox takes roughly eleven hours for a full charge on the Pro model, which is perfectly acceptable overnight. Fast charging capabilities are equally strong, with the ID.7 accepting up to 135 kW of direct current, getting you to 80 percent capacity in approximately 35 minutes at appropriate public chargers.

Price and Value

At around GBP 52,000 for the Standard model, rising to approximately GBP 57,000 for the Pro, the ID.7 sits in a competitive position within the premium electric saloon segment. Factor in the Plug-in Car Grant phase-out and vehicle tax advantages, and the overall cost of ownership becomes increasingly attractive compared to traditional petrol alternatives.

Known Issues and Considerations

Through conversations within the VW Owners Club community, early ID.7 owners have reported minor software quirks with the infotainment system, though these have generally been addressed through over-the-air updates. The interior plastics, whilst attractive, are occasionally prone to squeaks over rough British roads, but this is par for the course with most modern vehicles.

Should You Buy One?

If you’re seeking a spacious, sophisticated, and practical electric saloon with impressive range and charging capabilities, the ID.7 genuinely deserves serious consideration. It’s a mature, well-executed product that demonstrates VW’s commitment to electric mobility in the UK market.
