VW ID.4 Review – Is It Worth Buying in the UK?

Dave Fuller 30 March 2026

Understanding the VW ID.4 in the UK Market

The Volkswagen ID.4 has established itself as one of the most compelling electric SUVs available to British drivers. Since its introduction to UK showrooms in 2021, this five-seater has captured the attention of families and commuters looking to make the switch to electric without sacrificing practicality or comfort. But is it really worth your money? As someone who has followed the electric revolution closely and spoken with numerous owners through the VW Owners Club, I can offer some genuine insights into whether this vehicle deserves a place on your driveway.

The Practicality Question

One of the ID.4’s greatest strengths is its genuine usability for UK families. The cabin space is impressive for an SUV of its class, with comfortable seating for five adults and a boot that expands from 520 litres to over 1,500 litres when you fold down the rear seats. For school runs, weekly shopping trips, and holidays, this proves more than adequate. The raised driving position appeals to those upgrading from traditional SUVs, offering excellent visibility around UK town centres and motorways alike.

The infotainment system, built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, is intuitive and responsive. Updates have improved functionality across the 2022 and later model years, particularly in the areas of voice control and smartphone integration. Most owners I have encountered through the VW Owners Club appreciate how straightforward the technology feels compared to some competitors that seem unnecessarily complicated.

Real-World Range and Charging

The ID.4 comes in various battery configurations in the UK. The Standard model offers around 208 miles of WLTP range, which suits urban and suburban driving. The Pro and Pro Max variants push this to approximately 275 miles, making longer journeys more practical. In real-world winter conditions, expect slightly reduced range, typically around 10 to 15 percent less than the official figures.

Charging at home with a wallbox is the convenience factor that makes ownership truly worthwhile. A 7kW wallbox will fully charge the larger battery overnight, meaning you start each day with a full tank. For those without off-street parking, the ID.4 is less ideal, though UK public charging infrastructure continues to improve across most regions. The vehicle supports rapid DC charging, delivering 80 percent charge in roughly 30 minutes at compatible chargers.

Known Issues and Reliability

Early 2021 models experienced some software gremlins, but Volkswagen addressed these through over-the-air updates. The 2022 and 2023 model year ID.4s are substantially more refined. Some owners reported initial battery management software quirks, though these rarely affect real-world usability. The build quality is solid, with German engineering evident throughout the interior and chassis construction.

Service costs are reasonable, particularly if you opt for a dealer maintenance plan. Unlike traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, there are fewer moving parts, which translates to lower servicing expenses over time. Brake wear is minimal thanks to regenerative braking, extending pad life significantly.

Financial Considerations

The ID.4 qualifies for the plug-in car grant in various configurations, depending on model year and specification. Insurance groups are moderate, and fuel savings compared to equivalent petrol SUVs are substantial. Electricity costs work out to roughly one-quarter of petrol costs for equivalent mileage. Over a five-year ownership period, the total cost of ownership remains competitive with traditional vehicles, especially if you cover significant annual mileage.

The Verdict

The VW ID.4 represents an excellent choice if you have access to home charging and drive a reasonable amount to justify the transition to electric power. It offers genuine practicality, reliable performance, and strong residual values in the used market. The early teething troubles have largely been resolved in more recent model years.

If you are seriously considering the ID.4, I would strongly encourage joining the VW Owners Club community, where current owners freely share their experiences, troubleshooting advice, and ownership tips. There is real value in connecting with fellow enthusiasts who can offer perspectives based on months or years of genuine ownership experience.
