VW Passat Review – Is It Worth Buying in the UK?

Dave Fuller 30 March 2026

Why The VW Passat Deserves Your Attention

The Volkswagen Passat has been a cornerstone of the executive saloon market for decades, and in the UK, it remains one of the most sensible choices if you’re looking for a refined, practical family car. Whether you’re considering a used model or contemplating a new purchase, the Passat offers compelling reasons to be taken seriously. It’s the kind of car that appeals to both company car buyers and private owners who value German engineering without the premium badge price tag.

The current generation Passat, which arrived in 2014 and received a substantial facelift in 2019, represents a mature and well-developed platform. What this means for UK buyers is a car that’s had plenty of time to have its gremlins ironed out, making it a relatively safe used purchase if you buy wisely.

Interior Comfort And Practicality

One of the Passat’s greatest strengths is its interior space. The cabin feels genuinely premium, with quality plastics and an intuitive layout that most owners find refreshingly straightforward. The driving position is excellent, with plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel, making it comfortable for long motorway journeys. The infotainment system in newer models is modern and responsive, though some earlier models use older technology that feels dated by today’s standards.

Boot space is particularly impressive at 586 litres in sedan form, or significantly more if you opt for the Estate variant, which many UK owners prefer. For families and those who regularly transport larger items, the Estate is undoubtedly the better choice, though fuel consumption differences are minimal.

Engine Options And Running Costs

The Passat comes with a variety of powerplants depending on the model year. For UK buyers, the most common engines you’ll encounter are the 1.6 and 2.0 litre TSI petrol units, alongside 1.6 and 2.0 litre TDI diesel engines. The diesel versions have proven particularly popular in the UK market, offering strong fuel economy and decent performance. A 2.0 TDI can return mid-40s mpg on a combined cycle in real-world driving, which many owners report in the VW Owners Club forums.

If you’re looking at newer models from 2015 onwards, fuel consumption is noticeably improved compared to earlier generations. The 1.6 TDI is economical but can feel slightly underpowered with a full load, whereas the 2.0 TDI offers a better balance of performance and efficiency. Petrol models are smoother and quieter but will inevitably cost more to fuel.

Known Issues To Watch Out For

Despite its general solidity, there are some issues worth knowing about. Earlier models occasionally suffered from carbon buildup on petrol engines, though this became less problematic from around 2017 onwards. Some owners have reported issues with dual-mass flywheels on diesel versions, particularly on higher-mileage examples. This is worth investigating thoroughly if buying used.

The DSG automatic gearbox, available on many models, has a solid reputation when properly maintained, but servicing costs can be higher than you might expect. If you find a manual gearbox example, maintenance is simpler and cheaper. Always check the service history carefully, as Volkswagens that have been neglected will reveal their issues through higher running costs.

Is It Worth Buying?

For UK buyers, the answer largely depends on what you value. If you want a practical, comfortable family car that won’t embarrass you at the golf club, the Passat delivers admirably. Used examples from 2017 onwards represent good value, offering modern technology at reasonable secondhand prices. Newer cars will be more refined and economical, but older models are typically more affordable and, once you know what to look for, perfectly reliable.

What you won’t get from a Passat is excitement or sharp handling, but that’s not really what it’s designed for. It’s honest, competent, and understated in the best British sense.
